To get to the hill that overlooks the landfill, we had to go through this cemetery. The wall to the right of the children is approx. 200 ft. long and 50 ft. high---it houses coffins in vertical stacks and there are row after row of these structures. Some of the name plaques are elaborate with marble and gold leaf, others´ names are just written in the wet cement with a stick. The municipal government charges for these spaces on an annual basis, therefore, when you can no longer afford to pay for the space, the bones are removed and deposited in the dump that is just next door.
