This is the neighborhood where La Guarderia for the youngest children is located. The housing you see is actually fairly nice compared to the squatters' village in the third photo. The barbed wire fence surrounds the school and you may only enter, with permission, through a large door that is guarded around the clock.
Most of our children come from this neighborhood. Not all the houses have electricity or running water, most of them don't even have permanent walls or floors. For many. a centrally located water spicket is the only source of drinking, cooking and bathing water. Until La Guarderia opens, most of the little ones are just playing in the streets or sleeping in the shade of the structures.
This is the squatters' village that was literally erected overnight this past September. This view is from a second story window in La Guarderia. All the powers that be will be meeting at the end of this week to, hopefully, finalize a decision about these people (roughly 450-500). In the meantime, we continue to prepare the school and will be meeeting with the mothers of the students to discuss preparations for their new or returning students---and to assure them that we will only permit children back on the grounds if we are 150% certain of their safety. We have guards and vans on the premises at all times in the event an evacuation is necessary prior to an actual decision being made.
